Underground!! Why you should watch it!

Seeing the previews and advertisements for Underground (WGN), I automatically thought, "another slave show". As a black woman, wife of a black man, mother of two young black men, and two young black women.........I don't want to see another slave anything. I know the importance of passing on the lesson and history of my people. Teaching the younger generation about slavery and oppression. But these topics stir feelings of pain, anger, resentment, and to an extent hate. How do you teach and pass on these lessons without the emotions? Truth is, it's impossible. Human lessons involve human emotions. Although it's not a historically accurate depiction of what occurred. It opens a small window and allows us to look into the past. The story of the slaves as its shown can fit into history in so many narratives. In addition, seeing the slaves shown as people with intelligence, emotions that extend beyond anger, and even love. It's not the typical narrative. I can even see the relationship reference between blacks and native American people. I only knew the story of my family's relation to native Americans that was passed on from my great grandmother who died in 2004 at 90 years of age. If not for the sheer entertainment and insight, allow the show to spark curiosity that may motivate you to research your ancestry!

Update!!

Hello blog readers!! Yes I have been gone for some time. I'm back now and I'm ready to resume my blogging adventures. I have had to deal with life and the many things in life that keep us busy! Over the last year , I have had a major setback with my health. Having an autoimmune disorder is a part of life I have to live with daily. There is always something reminding me of the things I can no longer do. However, my blogging and sharing information is a part of my life that I never want to neglect. I can say that the setback was partially if not totally due to me failing to adhere to my medication regimen. Now that everything is returning to my sense of normal, I have a different perspective of what it means to maintain my health.
Also over the past 6 months my oldest son graduated high school. It was a bit of a transition for everyone. Especially for me realizing that I am the mother of an adult. He's a young adult , but an adult nonetheless.
So now that we've done a little catching up, I'm ready to get back on track with blogging. My next entry will be about comments made by Republican Party frontrunner Ben Carson and Donald Trump.

Review: As I Am Coconut CoWash

The As I Am product line has fast become popular with many naturals. It is among the most recognized brands for natural hair. One of the most popular prouducts offered by the brand is As I Am Coconut CoWash. I tried this product in a sample pack that I received way back when the line debuted. I wasn't very impressed at that time. Luckily for me, I gave this product another try and I'm not only impressed, but it's become a staple in my regimen. The details are as follows:

Ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificada, Purified) Extracts: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) and Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine)¹, Cetyl Alcohol², Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol², PEG-40 Castor Oil, Stearlkonium chloride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil², Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil¹, Phytosterols¹, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract¹, Quaternium-18, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance/Parfum, Limonene, Methylisothiazolinone.
Source: 1-Natural, 2-Coconut

Aesthetics: The product is a thick, creamy consistency very much that of a deep conditioner. It is pale pink in color, with a coconut like fragrance, but it's not strongly scented at all. It offers some slip for finger detangling and to help prevent tangles while you wash.

Cost & Availability: This CoWash is Packaged in a 16 oz. jar, and can be priced from $5.00-$9.00 which depends on where it's purchased. It's available at Walgreens, Target, Sally Beauty, CVS, some WalMart locations, and beauty supply stores. The retail stores are more likely to have sales and specials, I've found some good deals for this item at Sally Beauty and Walgreens stores.

Product claims/ Practicality of Use:
Spreads easily throughout hair.
Gently cleanses hair and scalp.
Maintains moisture, adds more moisture and helps hair retain moisture until your next cleanse.
Makes detangling a breeze.
Rinses easily from hair.
Helps promote a healthy environment for hair growth.
Gentle enough for daily use. Safe for color-treated hair.

Directions: Wet hair thoroughly,
Rub a liberal amount within palms and distribute throughout hair.
Work product through hair and massage scalp with fingertips as you would a conventional shampoo.
Carefully detangle hair with a wide-tooth comb,
Rinse well.
Repeat only if necessary to remove excessive product build up or for further scalp cleansing.
Follow with conditioning. Use either As I Am® Hydration Elation® Intensive Conditioning Treatment or As I Am® Leave-In Conditioner.

Effectiveness & Results: This Cowash really got the job done. It wash very cleansing for my hair and scalp.  It cleansed as well as my old moisturizing sulfate shampoo. My hair was left clean, conditioned and moisturized without being stripped, or left dry. I did transfer the product into a 16 oz. bottle which made it more convenient for the way I wash my hair. I used the product as directed and started by applying it from the roots, massaging my scalp and working it down my strands. The jar is not easy to use especially if your washing in the shower. This is the only drawback of this product so far and this can be easily remedied. Not only will I buy this product again, I already have an extra jar so that I can have it on hand when needed. This is a staple product that I don't plan to run out of. Keep in mind that I don't use products that tend to build up in my hair. Everyone may not have the same experience, because what works for me may not work for you.

D.I.Y. Avocado Deep Conditioner

I had a coworker that had an avocado tree in his yard. This tree produced some of the prettiest, large avocados and he'd bring me one at least once a week. Now, I am not a big fan of avocados. I do eat them, from time to time but not fast enough to keep them from going bad. So, being the natural hair lover that I am, I came up with a recipe to use my avocados in my beauty routine. The following is a recipe for my Avocado Deep Conditioning Mix.

1/2 Large Avocado (1 small)
1/2 Plantain (over ripe) **optional
2-3 Tbsp. Coconut milk
1Tbsp. Raw Honey or Agave nectar
1 Tbsp. Aloe Vera gel
2 tsp. Black Gold hair oil (www.SweetLoveNaturals.net)or oil of your choice.

This mix is so conditioning and moisturizing. It leaves my hair soft, strong, and silky. None of the ingredients give me the hard, stiff feel that I get after a protein treatment, but I get the effect in the feeling of my strands. They are left in great condition. This is not a thick mixture. I put mine in the blender to ensure that there are no chunks that can get caught in my hair. I then strain it through a strainer into a bowl or jar with a lid.

I apply this after I wash my hair. I then put on a plastic conditioning/shower cap and my Hot Head conditioning bonnet. This can be used as a deep conditioner whenever it is needed. You can also boost the mixture by adding a tablespoon of your favorite deep conditioner. Keep in mind all hair is different and what works for me may not work for you. The good thing is being able to tweek this recipe so that it meets your needs. Now that you have your marching orders, happy mixing!! Enjoy!!

Review: Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner

Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner is a rich, thick, Shea butter based conditioner that I've enjoyed using for the past few months. It's one of the company's first products, and I've seen more than a few curlies rave about it. In this post I'll share with you the important details of this product and my experience with it. Let's get to it!!

This product is a thick, white, Shea butter based leave in conditioner. It has a very pleasant fruity scent reminiscent of juicy fruit gum. It also provides a good amount of slip for detangling as a result of the centromonium chloride. It is moisturizing, without leaving a greasy residue.

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Deionized Water, Herbal Complex, Panthenol, Centromonium Chloride, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E.

Cost & Availability: The product is packaged in an 8 oz. flip top bottle. It can be purchased online, and the easiest way I've located it has been via Google search. It's price ranges from $8.00-$11.00 depending on the retailer.

Product Promise & Claims / Practicality of Use: Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner penetrates deep into hair and scalp to moisturize, repair and protect... transforming dull, lifeless hair into healthy, soft, shiny and manageable hair with extra body.

Directions: For best results, use after Shea Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo or as a daily moisturizer to instantly replenish lost moisture and strengthen hair. Apply from roots to ends and style.

I applied the leave in to my wet, T-shirt blotted hair after washing/cowashing. My hair was sectioned and clipped into place using butterfly clamps. A nickel sized amount of product was applied to each section from root to tip, and distributed throughout using my fingers. I then used a wide tooth comb to detangle my hair.

Effectiveness & Results: This product was so effective at moisturizing, softening, and detangling my hair that it is a staple/ Holy Grail product. It is just the right texture and thickness and provides excellent slip/lubrication for detangling. My hair was always soft, moisturized, and conditioned. I was able to reduce my single strand knots. I also mid week detangled by just adding water. It worked with all the other products I used in my regimen.

I will definitely be repurchasing and stocking up on this leave in. I wish I could go into a retail location and buy it off the shelf. I'd recommend it to anyone with hair that needs moisture, desires a heavier/thicker leave in, and/or with many textures and curl patterns.

Review: Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Leave In Conditioner

I've recently used the Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Leave In Conditioner. I used it after washing my hair and deep conditioning it. According to directions it should be applied after washing to soaking wet hair, any excess water should then be absorbed into a towel or cotton t-shirt, style hair as usual.

The Hair Milk Leave In is a thin, runny , white lotion like product. It has the same scent as the other products in the line. It contains a high content of oil that you can easily feel on your hands and hair.

Ingredients- Water, Soybean oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Fragrance, Agave extract. Ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbic acid, beeswax, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, polysorbate 80, Apricot Kernel oil, Jojoba Seed oil, Tocopherol, Wheat germ oil, Xantham gum, Methylisothiazolinone, phenoxyethanol.

Cost & Availability: This product is available for purchase at www.CarolsDaughter.com, Target, and www.Target.com. Due to recent repackaging the product is now marketed as Hair Milk Original Leave In Moisturiser. The listed price on both websites is $12.00 for 8oz. Carol's Daughter discount club members can purchase the product at a 10% discount with free shipping.

Product Promise & Useability: Dry hair = frizzy curls! So, protect your hair from unwanted situations – breakage, thirst and unmanageability – with this fan-favorite leave-in moisturizer. It has all the goodies you know and love, like Shea Butter to intensely hydrate curls, coils, kinks, and waves, plus Soybean Oil to soften and strengthen it too. We’ve also added Agave Nectar to ensure that your hair keeps moisture locked in and is extra healthy. This rich cream quickly and easily absorbs into your hair, leaving it glossy, nourished, and frizz-free. Hydrate your curls, coils, kinks, and waves to make frizzy, unmanageable hair a thing of the past!

Directions: After co-washing , apply a quarter-sized amount into soaking-wet hair, working it in evenly with your fingers. Use your hands to gently squeeze out excess water or use a cotton T- shirt for best results. Add more as necessary and style as desired.
The thiness of this product makes it easy to over apply and leave you with greasy hair.

Effectiveness & Results: This product is an effective leave in conditioner, because it is oil rich which helps to seal in moisture.  It is not effective for me to use in detangling because it provided no slip. It left my hair soft, but it is very light, and my hair texture and porosity it best cared for with a thicker, heavier leave in. With that being said I'm not sure if I'd buy this again. There is another version of the product available since I purchased this and it appears to be thicker, I may try it at a future date. I am considering using this in conjunction with a detangler, that is less moisturizing and can be improved by the water & oil content of this leave in. For now I'm putting it on the shelf for later use.

Good CoWash Conditioners

When I first attempted to Cowash I was not convinced it would work for me. To be honest I didn't like it. My hair didn't feel clean, I didn't get any added moisture, and it just felt like I rinsed it with conditioner. It was when I began using different products in my regimen that cowashing worked for me. The products were easier to remove and didn't need to be washed out with a shampoo product. I also found cowashing useful for adding moisture when I adopted a modified LOC (LCO) method. The key wasn't just cowashing but using it's along with other healthy hair practices that made the big picture a masterpiece. With that being said, if you have your healthy hair regimen in place, and no other cons to prevent your cowashing success I present you with a list of good Cowash conditioners.

1. Eden Body Works Coconut Shea Conditioning Cowash. $7-9 (16oz.)
2. As I Am Coconut Cowash $7-9 (16oz.)
3. Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner $3.99 (16oz.)
4. V05 Tea Therapy Blackberry Tea .75-$1(15oz.)
5. V05 Tea Therapy Chamomile Tea.75-$1(15oz.)
6. Suave Naturals Everlasting Sunshine $1-2 (16-22.5oz.)
7. Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut $1-2 (16-22.5oz.)
8. Suave Professionals Rosemary Mint $2-4 ( 15oz.-22.5oz.)
9. Suave Professionals Almond &Shea Butter $2-4 (15-22.5oz.)
10. Aussie Moist $2-7 (13.5oz-28oz)
11. Cantu for Natural Hair Cowash $5-8 (12oz.)
12. Herbal Essences Moroccan My Shine $3-7 (10.5-32oz.)
13. Herbal Essences Honey I'm Strong $3-7 (10.5-32oz.)
14. Pantene Truly Naturals Cowash $4-6 (22oz)

These are all products that I've used to Cowash and obtain some degree of success. Some were better than others, and some are good for refreshing, rinsing and freshening, adding moisture, cleansing, etc. There are many other products available and easily accessible. There is no need to purchase a high priced product that costs upwards of $1-2 per oz. when a basic conditioner with the same ingredients will do the same job, if not better. It's quite possible to purchase one of each conditioner listed above and not spend what it costs to buy a 32oz. size of these "miracle" cleansing conditioners. Don't be fooled by crafty advertising. No product takes you from dull, dry, straight and limp hair to a bouncy, spiral roller set. That look requires time, and technique. This post is just to give an idea of where to start and which products may help.

How To: Infuse and Store Herbal Infusions

Last month I received my Cream & Coco Hot Coco box for the month of January. This month's box focused on renewal, as it was the first box of a new year. The box contained seven goodies, amongst them a small satchet containing a blend of herbs, and minerals for infusion. It makes 6-8oz. of solution to ve used as a facial toner, or hair rinse. Knowing that I'm not a heavy user of either, I'd hate to infuse this wonderful blend and let it go to waste. Here's how I infused, and store my solution for long term use. Keep in mind that this method can be used for and infusion that you wish to store.

How marketing influences the products that we use.

I don't want nothin' made for white people hair....!!

Deep sigh......yes I recently heard this. No, I was told this directly. Someone I've known for a very long time came to me seeking help with their hair. They told me what they wanted to achieve, and what their current techniques were yielding. They asked for product recommendations, or suggestions and followed with, "I don't want nothing made for white people's hair". I was a bit surprised to hear this, but it presented an awesome opportunity to educate and give useful information.
I interjected with, "no such thing". I proceeded by informing her that, "when you see a commercial on television, and the people in that commercial, that represents a target audience. They want to give the impression that use of their product will yield the results your seeing on television. The next time you purchase a product marketed towards a black audience. Look at the ingredients on the label, and compare those ingredients with the labels of products marketed toward white consumers. You'll most likely see that they have the same key ingredients. Not one ingredient says cetrimonium chloride for black hair, or cetrimonium chloride for white hair. It simply says cetrimonium chloride, as do the remaining ingredients. Making them usable for either hair type.

Where do products differ?

Products differ in a few ways. They mostly pertain to thickness/consistency, additives such as botanicals, herbs, humectants, etc., and ingredients that improve functionality such as detangling, clarifying, adding body/volume, smoothing the hair shaft, and moisturizing agents.

What's needed by hair!

Most afro textured hair needs two things constantly, and moisture is one of them. Moisture is key to maintaining healthy hair and preventing breakage. A good conditioner regardless of marketing, yields good moisturizing benefits. My favorite moisturizing conditioners are not marketed to afro textured customers but is widely used in the natural community.

Natural hair also needs protein balance. Once again my favorite conditioner for protein is not marketed to afro textured customers. This applies to the majority of my products.

I've found that the products marketed towards afro textured hair don't yield much different results for me. I do own and use some afro specific products and they work great. But it is not always necessary to use afro products. I can truly say I would have missed out on some valuable staple products that have really helped keep my hair healthy, had I not tried certain products "white people products".  I use products marketed towards hispanic consumers (Crece Pelo, Baba de Caracol), Herbal Essences, Pantene, Tresemme, Aussie Moist, Loreal, Organix, You won't know what will and won't work unless you try it.

Welcome to 2014

HAPPY 2014!!

It's a new year and I'm so excited about what's to come. First, I've launched my company and I'm looking forward to growth and product development. I'm planning to remain passionate about meeting the needs of my customers and providing excellent customer service.

Second, I have lots of videos planned for the YouTube channel. I'll be introducing my company and products, doing demonstrations with before and after perspectives, and doing educational videos. I've gained an understanding of what naturals need to know to help with their journey, and an insight into the misinformation that they've received. There are so many naturals that have been done a disservice because they followed the wrong information.

Third, I'd really enjoy more interaction with my audience. This will help me put my finger on the pulse of what my viewers need and want to see. I have planned series of videos to cover different parts of a natural regimen, what products would work, and what techniques are recommended.

I'm fully immersing myself into this blog, YouTube channel, and this company to provide a full circle experience! I hope that you will be with me every step of the way. I'm sure there may be a few bumps in the road, I'm no guru or expert, but I have the advantage of experience and research. I've come to learn what may or may not work. The basics are all the same, but the products and techniques will require some tweaking. With the right guidance, and information the natural experience can be great. I look forward to a great 2014!!

Carol's Daughter-- Mimosa Hair Honey (Remixed)

Back in June I purchased a new product with high hopes, the Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey I was so excited about this product even though I'm familiar with ingredients and know that there is no miracle or wonder product. I read all the reviews I could find online, watched the YouTube videos, went through the forums, you name it. I got my product and I couldn't wait to use it.

I rushed the box inside and opened it up. I grabbed the 8 oz. jar and twisted the top off to smell that wonderful scent that everyone spoke of in their favorable reviews.  Huh, yeah right.....first issue- I live in South Florida and my package had been in my mailbox, in the summer sun so it was a runny mess. I nearly poured it from the jar in my eagerness to smell it, and the smell wasn't all that. Take it from me the lady with the nose of a blood hound. It was a pleasant smell but the majority of hair products have a nice scent, that's part of the allure.  I popped it into the refrigerator for a few hours to get it temperate and firm.

Upon removing the Mimosa Hair Honey I was left a little underwhelmed. It was the consistency of a thick, runny, liquid pomade. It in  no way had the consistency of a traditional pomade, not even the light, thin versions.

Package Claim: Mimosa Hair Honey is a shine- boosting pomade that helps control frizz for smooth styles. The blend of Nettle Extract with Cocoa and Shea butters nourish your hair to replenish its natural strength, give it softness, and improve its manageability. Made with beeswax to seal in moisture for better shine, and made without mineral oil or petroleum so your hair will not be weighed down.

I tried to use it on my scalp but managed to create a greasy, oily mess. I tried it on my daughters hair and it was too light. However in both cases it did yield a decent shine/sheen. Next I tried it as a sealant in the L.O.C. method. it was only okay. It was now time to brainstorm and figure out what to do with this product to make it usable to me.

As a product maker and mixstress, I immediately went to the ingredient list to try and figure out what could improve the product. I figured that it only needed a little added firmness, something to make it less runny, and more like a traditional pomade/ hair grease. I had just the right ingredient in my  supply stash, beeswax. I rely on it in many formulations to add body and firmness to product texture. It helps to hold these formulations together, and homogenize butter and oil mixes in pomades.

I must say that after remixing the product to the desired consistency, I have been using it with satisfaction. It is very oily, and you can easily apply too much. Having a light hand is essential to using this product. I  apply it mostly to my daughter's dry scalp because she wears her hair in protective styles 90% of the time.  I use it to add shine to her styles and my twists and a little goes a long way. I have barely made a dent in this jar.

To sum it all up the product does exactly as it says, adds shine as a 'shine pomade hairdress." It is definitely an investment at a price of $17.00 for an 8 oz. jar. It has good ingredients that are commonly found in quality hair products and is available both on ground and by internet order. I'd recommend waiting for a black Friday sale, or purchasing a membership which gives you a 10% discount and free standard shipping for one year. The membership sometimes goes on sale for less than the regular $25.00 price(I paid $5.00).  If you can get this product on sale, try it.

REVIEW- Hot Head Thermal Deep Conditioning Cap

I am super excited to announce that my Hot Head heated conditioning bonnet has arrived, and just in time because today is wash day for me. A few weeks ago I contact the owner of the Hot Head brand via her Etsy store and expressed my interest in her brand. I'd previously seen many YouTubers and forum posts and reviews on the Hair Therapy Wrap but very, very, few on the Hot Head. From my observation the Hair Therapy Wrap appears to be bulky, and requires the user to insert and remove gel packs which can burst when over heated, or can be punctured and damaged.

The Hot Head is a self contained, microwaveable unit containing flax seed. It is heated in the microwave for no more than one minute and ten seconds. It is then placed over applied conditioner that is covered with a plastic conditioning cap, and worn as you would wear any other bonnet.

Statement from merchant:
Dry, Frizzy, or Damaged Hair? Looking for the best way to bring your hair back to life? Specially created Hot Head Thermal Hair Care are reusable, microwaveable caps made with comfy terry cloth and cotton designed with special flax-filled pouches to distribute the heat effectively and moisturize your hair like never before!

More info at: www.thermalhaircare.com

Hot Head is designed to improve your hair's ability to absorb deep conditioner. The moist heat provided by Hot Head allows your hair follicles to open up and maximize your deep conditioning treatment. This is a great option for helping to eliminate numerous hair "challenges". Thermal hair repair is the best way to truly amplify your conditioning treatment and get a noticeable improvement quickly.

The best part about this product is that it's easy to use. Just microwave and wear for the healthiest of hair! Simply place the Hot Head in the microwave for about a minute and place on your head with a plastic cap to fully indulge your hair.

Thermal Treatment is one reason salon conditioned hair looks so fabulous - with Hot Head you can now do it in the comfort of your home! Plus it’s reversible… so why not mix it up!

Stylists know you can’t beat the heat for luscious, hydrated hair.

It’s as simple as…
1. Conditioner
2. Plastic Cap
3. Hot Head
For the healthiest of locks!

Get ready to see your hair look healthier than ever.

My Experience:

I washed my hair as I normally would and used a sulfate shampoo, the Suave Everlasting Sunshine Shampoo. I then proceeded to apply my deep conditioners starting with the Komaza Care Olive Moisture mask, which I had very little of and needed to finish off. It provided some slip/lubrication to the hair for finger detangling. Next, I applied my Crece Pelo Treatment and finger combed through my hair while it was sectioned to ensure complete coverage. I then gathered my hair at the crown of my head and put on a plastic conditioning cap, and covered my head with the Hot Head Thermal Deep Conditioning  Heat Cap. I'd previously heated my Hot Head in the microwave for a total of 1 minute 10 seconds in accordance with the manufacturer directions. It may be heated longer if you prefer, however it is advised that you heat it in 10 second increments, and reposition it to ensure even heating.

It remained warm for approximately 35-45 minutes. However I was able to wear it for little more than an hour because the heat that it generated while it was warm, had been trapped underneath. When I removed the caps, I allowed my hair a cooling period and I must say that my hair felt as it did when I'd sat under a hooded dryer at home or in a salon. Previous to the Hot Head, I would wear a conditioning cap for a long period and wrap it with something to hold heat in. This was done for a minimum of two hours, and sometimes overnight. I am more than thrilled to have  the Hot Head as a conditioning aid. I received the maximum benefit from my conditioning session. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to improve upon their conditioning experience. It can be purchased by accessing the link below and is available in different styles.

Review: Silicon Mix Bambu Treatment

The Silicon Mix Bambu Treatment is a Dominican manufactured product. It's made by Avanti and is widely popular in Dominican salons, and among the Hispanic and natural community. I purchased this product to use on my daughter's and my hair. She is transitioning, and mostly natural. I've been keeping her hair in protective styles.

A. Ingredients- the ingredients in this product include, water, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, mineral oil, glycerin, behentrimonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride, propylene glycol, Bambusa Vulgaris extract (Bamboo), polysorbate 20, alcohol denat, horse chestnut seed extract, retinyl palmitate, tocopherol, PABA, inositol, panthenol, linoleic acid, biotin, cyclomethicone, dimethiconol, citric acid, polyparaben, methyl paraben, diazolidinyl UREA, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, fragrance, color.

Bamboo extract is the ninth listed ingredient from a total of twenty eight. The product also contains mineral oil (4th), parabens, and true to its name silicones. This is not a natural or an organic product. Other ingredients include biotin, panthenol, and horse chestnut extract.

B. Aesthetics- This product is creamy and of medium thickness. It is a light orange color, with a very strong, perfume like scent. It is not as thick as I'd prefer but the amount of slip it offers is good for detangling.

C. Cost & Availability- I purchased this product in an 8 oz. jar from my local beauty supply store for $5.99.  It was also available in 16 oz. size for $9.99. It is readily available at both my local beauty supply stores. Larger sizes of 32oz. for $14.95, and 1/2 gallon for approximately $26.99, are available online. I've used Bluebeez.com and received really good service, a fair price, and low shipping.

D. Product Promise & Practicality of Use- Nutritive Hair Treatment Bambu contains bamboo extract a natural product to regenerate and nourish hair, and silicones to smooth and give shine. Prevents hair breakage and split ends. Vitamin A, E, F, H, (Biotin), Pro-Vitamin B5 (Panthenol), H8 (Inositol), and Horse Chestnut Extract
Improve the health and beauty of the hair helping it to grow longer.

It is very practical to use, the directions instruct the user to wash hair and apply with massages. Leave on 3 or more minutes depending on the condition of the hair. Rinse.

D. Effectiveness & Results- The product effectively softened my hair, left the cuticles feeling smooth, clumped my curls, and added slip to aid in detangling. It gave the same results for my daughter and left a healthy shine on her hair.
The results were satisfactory considering the less than stellar and inorganic ingredients. I don't frown upon certain ingredients being in a rinse out product because its not left in my hair.  I will purchase this product again. I've only gotten two uses from this small jar so my next purchase will be 16oz. because I love the slip. The results are comparable to more popular, expensive and "natural" brands. Haven't really found any negative reviews. Any complaints were in relation to the strength of the fragrance. It is a perfume like fragrance that is really strong. It lingers a little after rinsing, but soon wears off. The product is not a miracle product but is definitely worth trying. Keep in mind everyone's hair is different and responds differently to products, and techniques.

Softcup menstrual cup

I must have seen the Softcup at least fifty times through the years, and passed it up. It was constantly there on the aisle with the other feminine hygiene supplies. When I did pick the box up and I read the description, I had no interest in what I thought was a "gross" idea.

Fast forward to October 2012, I was browsing through my local drugstore and there it was again, the Softcup. So in spite of my previous opinion I picked the box up and placed it in the cart. Now, any of my close friends (2 to be exact), can tell you how I detest my period. There I said it. As natural as it is, as long as I've lived with it, I DETEST it.  What's worse is that I absolutely can't wear tampons. I wouldn't if I could, I strongly dislike those too. Which left me with one option, the pad or so I thought.

**Que the angels** I used the Softcup for the first time and I was in love with it. Now there is a learning curve. But it is not, I repeat NOT gross. The fluid is captured in the cup. If inserted and removed properly, it remains in the cup. You empty it in the toilet, rinse and reinsert. The cup can be worn for up to 12 hours. After this it must be removed and rinsed if your reusing, or replaced if being disposed of. It may require more frequent removal and emptying depending on menstrual flow.

I have used the disposable and reusable Softcup and the only difference is that the reusable has a more durable material used to capture the fluid. However I've used the disposable for multiple days with no problems.

I must say that I highly recommend the Softcup. It has made my period virtually undetectable. In addition it is very clean, as I don't have on a used pad next to my skin with waste on it, and I don't have to use a tampon which would hold the waste in, place me at risk of TSS, and is processed using chemicals. The only negative is that it has to be disposed of. The price point is about $7-$9.00 for the 14 pack of disposables, and $6-7 for a 2 pack of reusables which are only available online but this price includes shipping. They have excellent customer service. I would advise you not to knock it until you try it. Just think that I missed out on the benefits of Softcup for so long. I am so happy that I gave in to curiosity and tried it. I can truly say it changed my life. I am in no way affiliated with, employed by, persuaded, coached or compensated by evofem the manufacturer of Instead Softcup.

KREYOL ESSENCE- IN REVIEW

KREYOL ESSENCE: Palma Christi : Oil of Haiti - 100% Organic & Unrefined Haitian Black Castor Oil (Lwil Maskreti) Recently I started a Castor oil challenge that I've written about on the blog. While doing research of Jamaican Black Castor Oil, I came accross information about Haitian Black Castor Oil from Haiti. I asked around and one of my Haitian friends referred to it as Lwil Maskreti (will-mass-cri-tee), the Kreyol name. Even then it sounded familiar but I couldn't figure out why. After going to all of the ethnic, stores around town I finally came across an ounce of the oil, which was in very limited supply being that it had to be imported by someone traveling from Haiti.

It is stored in a jug behind the counter of the store, usually wrapped to be protected from the light. After one whiff I vividly remembered where I'd first smelled the Haitian oil, the babies that my grandmother kept for the Haitian women that worked in the fields. When they were sick, their mother's would always bring this little dropper bottle of oil. It smelled like smoke and wood ash, and we had to rub it in the top of their heads, onto their foreheads, and their chests. It was also given internally and my grandmother hated that because it made them use the bathroom and that meant more diapers to change. It was called Lwil Maskreti (will mass-cri-tee). We didn't know that it was Black Castor Oil from Haiti, the same thing as the thick, light yellow Castor oil my grandmother would make us swallow when we were sick, and to scathe off illness. If we were lucky there was orange juice in the house, or we could get it mixed with lemon juice and sugar.

So after obtaining an ounce of this wonderful oil, I went on a mad quest for knowledge and learned all of the wonderful properties and benefits of this black Castor oil. I also learned that it was as good as, if not better than Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Now if only I had a source by which to obtain it. All of the oil that I found commercially which was very little, was exactly the same as the Castor oil I'd found in the pharmacy. Ahem...... NO!! I want the real thing. As luck would have it I found another blogger that listed the company Kreyol Essence as a supplier of 100% Organic & Unrefined Haitian Castor Oil. Unable to order from the website, I called the customer service number and left a message, I hate leaving messages but I was desperate y'all.

I must say that Kreyol Essence has great customer service. I spoke with Mr. Stephane Jean-Baptiste, Chief Operations Officer (and future husband of the company's founder Yve-Car Momperousse), both of Haitian descent. I explained that I wanted to obtain and review the product for my blog and YouTube channel. We discussed our histories with this oil, and he arranged to have samples delivered to me. I must say that this product is the exact same thing as the oil that I had to go on a wild goose chase to obtain. But this oil is even better, why you ask:

1. It is from a reliable source so it is not adulterated for profit or to meet personal taste preferences. When obtaining oil from other sources, you have no guarantee, or implication as to the quality of the oil or quality control measures taken during manufacturing. Kreyol Essence Haitian Castor Oil is 100% Organic and Unrefined.

2. It is a resource to the Haitian people and is providing valuable income, and employment opportunities to the manufacturers, farmers, and exporters of this authentic commodity.

3. When you purchase Kreyol Essence products you are investing in the people of Haiti who were severely impacted by the earthquake. The company is projected to employ as many as 125 employees. Palma Christi: The Oil of Haiti is the first and only 100% organic Haitian Castor oil on the market.

THE REVIEW

As stated on the bottle: Palma Christi: The Oil of Haiti(TM) is the first and only 100% organic Haitian Castor Oil on the market. Palma Christi is an ancient oil that has medicinal, curative and therapeutic benefits. This rich and smooth enchanted oil is extracted using a traditional Haitian method that is guaranteed to contain the full range of highly active and undamaged healing properties needed to:

Thicken and nourish hair| Prevent hair loss| Rejuvenate and moisturizes skin to keep wrinkles at bay| Prevent scars and stretch marks| Remove calluses, corns, warts, and moles| Encourage nail growth| Relieve arthritis, back pain and muscle aches & so much more!

DIRECTIONS: Hair growth: apply directly to the scalp and rub in with fingers for maximum penetration of oil. Deep Conditioner: Add to your favorite conditioner or place in hair as hot oil treatment for 30-60 minutes with heat. For extremely damaged hair leave on overnight. Body Aches: For healing of tissues and organs soak flannel in Castor oil and place in the area of pain. Corns: Apply oil once or twice daily to the corns, then surround the corn with an adhesive corn pad that is cut out in the middle. Nails: Apply the oil to your nails with a cotton swab. Apply freely to cuticles.

My Experience:

I use the oil for hair growth, body aches, body massage, medicinal, and skin care needs. I dilute it for my scalp by mixing one part Extra Virgin Castor Oil (EVCO), and two parts Palma Christi Haitian Black Castor Oil (HBCO), and French Lavender & Rosemary EO drops. I apply it undiluted to my thin problem spot. I apply it to my problem spot daily and massage for 5-10 minutes to aid penetration and increase circulation. Since I began using the Castor oil my very thin spot just beyond my edges, on the right side which stretches from my temple area to just above my ear, has thickened and filled in some. I also apply it undiluted, twice a week to my brows and lashes, using a lash brush. For massage, I apply it to my back and use a percussion massager, and then cover with a piece of plastic/plastic wrap, and heat pack. I use it on my knee also which I recently fell and injured. I have used this oil for my sinus allergy flare ups and it worked very well. I placed it on a cotton swab and rubbed it high up in my nostrils to shrink inflamed, swollen tissue. It is great on acne and inflamed skin, after washing my face I place two drops of HBCO and two drops of Jojoba oil, in the palm of my wet hand, rub my hands together and apply it to my very wet face. I also use it to spot treat pimples as they form.

Much like the Haitian people who use this oil for so much I am totally smitten with this oil and would not be without it. It has so many uses and has nearly replaced all other oils used on my body with the exception of coconut and Shea oil. Any other oils are used in combinations, oil mixes, and  butter mixes. Although the Kreyol Essence website is unavailable for ordering, by going to the site and registering they will send an exclusive email containing a purchase link for this product. Please visit the Kreyol Essence website at:www.KreyolEssence.com. The company has even more products in the works and I am so excited and looking forward to becoming a loyal customer. The Palma Christi Haitian Castor Oil is totally worth it and of the best quality. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to try authentic black Castor oil.

How To: Deodorizing Haitian/Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There are many that want to use the popular Jamaican Black Castor Oil, or the Haitian version. However there is on common complaint among those using it- the scent. It has a very unique smokey aroma, which comes from the roasting of the castor beans. The beans are harvested, washed, and allowed to dry in the sun. They are then roasted over an open fire pit in a cast iron pot using constant turning, crushed to extract the oil, drained, and then boiled to further extract the oil.  The roasting process leaves behind a scent of smoke. This is what turns many users off.

When I got my first oil I didn't know what to expect as far as the aroma. I got it in a small container and some leaked onto my hand when I opened it. It was a dark liquid that appeared black, and it was thick like molasses. The smell however was nothing sweet and quite strong. So strong that when I opened it in the car everyone let their windows down. The container that I used when I purchased the oil was not the one I planned to use it from. I showed up to buy it not knowing it was from a large jug and I needed to bring a container so I just grabbed what was convenient in my purse, a pill bottle. When I reached home I transferred the oil into my bottle with the applicator tip. A small amount of oil remained pooled in the pill bottle, which
smelled heavily of the oil. For some reason I left the pill bottle sitting open on my bedroom dresser.

Days later I picked up the bottle thinking why is this just sitting here. That quickly I'd forgotten what had been in the bottle, until I saw the small amount of pooled, dark colored oil. I dipped my finger into the bottle and pulled out just enough to wet my fingertip. The oil and the bottle had absolutely NO SCENT. Over the course of a few days the aroma of burnt rubber had completely dissipated. Gone, completely from the oil and bottle. This led me to discover that the scent of the oil will disappear over time if exposed to air.

To accomplish this: use a glass baking dish that is at least 9x13, or large enough so that the oil is in a thin layer. I chose glass because its a non reactive material. Pour your oil into the dish and place it where it can't waste or be tipped over. Allow it to sit in the open exposed to the air in your home for a few days, 2-3, depending on the strength of the aroma, stirring occasionally. When the scent has dissipated to your satisfaction, place the oil back into a capped or lidded container. Hopefully this process will make it easier to use this wonderful oil. You may also add an essential oil to the castor oil. Lavender, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint, Sweet Orange, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Lemon/ Lemongrass are all essential oils that I've seen used with success. Please add essential oils in the appropriate ratio and allow time for the scent to develope, it may take a few hours.

Castor Oil Challenge-End of Week 2

This is for end of week two of the castor oil challenge. This week I applied castor oil to my affected area( just above my right ear and near my hairline) daily, and to my entire scalp three times. I massaged my scalp a total of fifteen minutes every night, and I massaged my problem area several times for short periods during the day.
I even used a percussion massager on my scalp a few times. It was very relaxing, I don't know if it helped with growth, or thickening.

I added a third of Extra Virgin Coconut oil to my castor oil also. This is what I will be using until the end of the challenge. I have castor oil in my spritz, and my butter mix for sealing. Using the oil from my fingers after massaging my scalp gives my hair the healthiest shine ever. I only have about an ounce of castor oil mix remaining, but a little goes a long way.

My result photos are below. I see no progress but it has only been two weeks so far.

Wash and Go fail

This post is about just what the title states. I have been natural for nearly two and a half years and I've only tried a wash and go twice prior to yesterday. When I had shorter hair, my regimen consisted of washing, conditioning, moisturizing, detangling, and twisting. Now that I have length, the only way my hair dries and its not like a giant cotton ball, with a web of tangles is if I twist, flat twist, coil or braid it. I cannot leave my hair to its own devices or it will knot onto itself causing me pain(literally), and loss strands.

I don't know why I felt as though Wednesday would be different. I wanted to refresh my hair and add moisture so I co washed and left a little V05 Shea Cashmere conditioner in my hair.  I then added oils( castor,African Pride Olive Miracle), and Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Coconut Curling Cream. It looked nice and moisturizer. I didn't have much definition, but it looked fine. Then I allowed it to dry. I ended up with a dry frizzy mess, sitting and thinking what did I do wrong?
I don't plan to try the wash and go again anytime soon however, next time I plan to complete every step in my regimen, and add a curling cream, or styler, and shingle using my Denman brush. I get nice curl definition using this method when I prepare my hair for twists. But I'll skip the twist step and let it dry lose.  I am going to give it at least three tries before I rule out wearing wash and go styles. I love my curl pattern, but I can't take the tangled web it weaves when allowed to dry lose. Any advice readers? Chime in please, and save me some pain and strands.

Castor Oil Challenge- September 2012

I am so glad that September has finally arrived because this month kicks off our Castor oil challenge. I decided to start the challenge because I have a problem area on the right side of my head, located just above the ear, about half inch wide and two inches long. The hair is very fine, and looks as if I'm going bald.  I can hide this spot with hair but I am aware that its there and I want to test the effectiveness of the Haitian Black Castor Oil I obtained from a local market. Beginning September 1, 2012 and ending November 6, 2012 I'm starting a 60 day Castor oil challenge. The guidelines f the challenge are as follows:

1. Post pictures and/or measurement of your current length, thickness, and or area to be treated.
2. Use Castor oil at least three times weekly on scalp(entirely or focused area).
3. Disclose other ways you use Castor oil in your regimen i.e. sealant, butter mixes, spritz, DC, hot oil treatments, added to finished products.
4. All Castor oil mixes must be a minimum of 50%(half) Castor oil. No added Biotin, MSM, Cayenne pepper, Paprika. Cannot be a grease claiming to contain Castor oil.
5. Disclose type of Castor oil used, i.e. Regular(medical/refined/cosmetic), Jamaican/ Haitian Black Castor Oil, a blend of different Castor oils.
6. Post picture/ length check weekly, state number of times Castor oil was applied that week, and how applied.
7. Post any negative effects, or changes such as a different Castor oil, different regimen, etc. anything that can effect hair grow.

I am using Haitian Black Castor Oil. I will be applying it daily to my problem area pictured below. I will also be applying a mix of Olde Jamaica Castor Oil blend and Haitian Castor oil with Lavender essential oil to my entire scalp three times a week, along with a daily scalp massage. I have regular Castor oil in my Butter mix that I use for sealing, and my moisture/ re wetting spritz.

NOTE: Black Castor Oil has a very distinct smell. No one describes it the same. It has a smoky aroma, similar to wood chips, or a fire log.

Results- Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils

My most recent review was for Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils. I did a full review of  the product line and posted it on this blog and my YouTube channel. The last step and product in the line is the Curl La La: Defining Curl Custard. After applying the custard, I twisted my hair in three strand twists and it remained that way for about three or four days. I did add moisture to my hair, using a simple oil and water spritz, which is a part of my routine. Now this is where it turns, I had to undo my twists, and when I untwisted my hair it was very, very soft. My hair felt like cotton, but it was also very tangled like balls of cotton. I had to detangle with my life saving concoction of water, oil, and conditioner to retwist for the night. My roots were like tied knots as if there had been a crew of knot fairies working overtime.  Because I have many dense textures, having to detangle is not only a hassle but it can lead to breakage and damage to my strands, which should be avoided in any healthy hair regimen.

Now, for the good part. There are curlies that need softening. They need products that not only work but make or keeps the hair soft. This is a perfect product for them. However I have not given up on the product.  I am going to use it in my regimen as my twisting cream, proceeded by the LOC method. Because this product offers medium hold and good definition, I definitely want to see how it works with the LOC method. I am also going to reuse the entire line and add my butter mix (O) and the Beautiful Textures Moisture Butter (C) in between the Aunt Jackie's Knot On My Watch (L), and the Aunt Jackie's Curl la la(S). I hope I will see more satisfactory results.
